The place — Stadteingang West #
The West Side Gallery sits at the Stadteingang West, Berlin’s western gateway: by Grunewald S-Bahn station, Eichkampstraße 155–167, 14055 Berlin — where the metropolis gives way to the Grunewald forest.
A threshold, not a backyard #
Whoever enters Berlin by S-Bahn from the west crosses the border between forest and city right here. The place is no arbitrary strip of edge land but a real threshold — the first and last impression of the city for everyone arriving by rail. It is exactly this visibility that makes it a stage.
Between track and Grunewald #
- To the north the S-Bahn line: the sightline along which the spray gallery shows its works.
- To the south and west the Grunewald: Berlin’s great city forest, recreation ground and green backdrop at once.
- In between the site on Eichkampstraße 155–167, where the art house and the spray gallery come together.
Getting there #
The place is directly reachable by S-Bahn — Grunewald station lies right by the gallery. That connects the West Side Gallery exactly as intended: you step off the train and stand in the middle of it.
Under development. The Stadteingang West is developing further in urban-planning terms. The West Side Gallery uses and enlivens the place in this process — visible, public and part of the neighbourhood from the start.
